358. ʿAbdullāh narrated to us; he said: Isḥāq ibn Ismāʿīl narrated to us; he said: Jarīr narrated to us, from ʿAṭāʾ ibn as-Sāʾib, from Abū Ẓubyān, who said:

“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was on the Tabūk expedition when hunger overtook them. They entered one of the valleys, and he lay down to sleep. When he awoke he found the people’s pots boiling. He asked, ‘What is this?’ They replied, ‘Sand lizards (ḍabb) we caught in this valley.’ He asked that one be brought to him; it was placed before him, and he turned it over with a stick, then said, ‘The hand is the hand of a human, yet nations from the Children of Israel incurred wrath and were transformed on earth into beasts.’ ⦗226⦘
