355 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; he said: al-Qasim ibn Hashim told me; he said: Yaʿla ibn ʿAyyash related to us; he said: Saʿid ibn ʿUmara, from al-Harith ibn al-Nuʿman, reported: Anas ibn Malik was dispatched to me and recounted:

ʿUmar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) took hold of the two door-posts at the entrance to the Messenger of Allah’s house (peace and blessings be upon him) and proclaimed: “People of Madinah! You have been shaken, and such trembling is caused by widespread ribā (usury). The withholding of rain is because of corrupt judges and oppressive leaders, while the death of livestock and the shortage of fruit come from withholding ṣadaqa (almsgiving). Will you not desist, or shall ʿUmar depart from your midst?”
