39 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; he said: Abū Khaythama narrated to us; he said: Jarīr ibn ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd informed us, from Ismāʿīl ibn Abī Khālid, from Qays ibn Abī Ḥāzim, who said:

Abū Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) recited this verse: “O you who believe, guard your own souls; those who have gone astray will not harm you once you have been guided” (al-Māʾidah 5:105). He then said, “People are applying this verse where it does not belong. Indeed, I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, ⦗43⦘ ‘When a people see an oppressor and do not restrain him, or witness an evil and do not change it, Allah will encompass them all with His punishment.’”
