343 – ʿAbdullāh narrated to us; Hārūn ibn Sufyān related to me; ʿAbdullāh ibn Yaʿqūb al-Muzanī then narrated to us; Zufar ibn Muḥammad al-Fihrī reported from Muḥammad ibn Sulaymān ibn Makhramah, from Saʿīd ibn Jubayr—whom al-Ḥajjāj put to death—from Abū Hurayrah, who said:

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

“The Hour will not arrive until obscenity and shamelessness become widespread, the trustworthy are deemed treacherous while the treacherous are trusted, the wuʿūl fall low and the tuḥūt rise high.”

They asked, “O Messenger of Allah, what are the wuʿūl and what are the tuḥūt?” He replied, “The wuʿūl are the nobles and leading figures among the people, whereas the tuḥūt are those who once were beneath everyone’s feet.”
