37 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; he said: Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥasan narrated to us, from Ibrāhīm ibn al-Ashʿath, who said: I heard al-Fuḍayl ibn ʿIyāḍ say:
“It is related from the Prophet of Allah (blessings and peace be upon him) that he said:
‘When my community comes to magnify the worldly life, the awe of Islam will be taken away from them; and when they give up enjoining what is right and forbidding what is wrong, they will be deprived of the blessing of revelation.’”
Abū Isḥāq said: “It has reached me that Ibn al-Mubārak was asked, ‘Which deeds are the most excellent?’ He replied, ‘Sincere counsel for Allah.’ He was asked, ‘And enjoining what is right and forbidding what is wrong?’ He said, ‘That is jihad. If a person truly offers sincere counsel, would he then refrain from commanding or forbidding?’”
