330 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us, saying: ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Ṣāliḥ narrated to us, saying: Abū Bakr ibn ʿAyyāsh narrated to us, saying: ⦗210⦘
When ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib set out from al-Madāʾin on his march to Ṣiffīn, a man from among his companions began to recite:
[al-Baḥr al-Kāmil]
“The winds have swept across the place where their houses stood,
as though they had all met at a set appointment and departed.
And every pleasure and all that once beguiled the soul
will one day crumble away and perish.”
ʿAlī said, “Do not speak like that. Rather say as Allah, Exalted is He, has said:
‘How many gardens and springs did they leave behind, and fields, and splendid dwellings, and every favor in which they once delighted…’ (Quran 44:26)
—and—
‘Thus it was; We caused other people to inherit them.’ (Quran 44:28)
These people were once the inheritors, but they themselves ended up being inherited. They violated the sacred limits, so retribution descended upon them. Therefore, do not violate the sacred limits, lest retribution descend upon you.”
