322 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us: al-Qasim ibn Hashim narrated to us, saying: Adam ibn Abi Iyas al-ʿAsqalani narrated to us, saying: Shuʿbah narrated to us, saying: Qays ibn Muslim, on the authority of Tariq ibn Shihab, reported:

“Khalid ibn al-Walid administered the prescribed punishment (hadd) to a man in the time of ʿUmar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him), and then he administered the same punishment to another man. Someone protested, ‘By Allah, this is fitnah: yesterday you struck one man, and today you strike another.’ Khalid replied, ‘This is not fitnah. Fitnah is when you are in a land where sins are being committed, and you want to go to a land where sins are not being committed, yet you cannot find such a place.’”
