315 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; he said: Abū Muḥammad al-ʿAmmī related to me, from ʿAlī b. Muḥammad al-Qurashī, from Juwayriyyah b. Asmāʾ, from his paternal uncle, who said:
“I performed the pilgrimage. While I was traveling with a company of people, we halted at a campsite, and a woman was with us. She fell asleep; when she awoke, a snake was coiled around her, its head drawn together with its tail between her breasts. The sight alarmed us, yet we mounted and moved on, and the serpent remained wrapped around her without harming her in any way until we entered the boundary markers of the Sacred Precinct, whereupon it slipped off. ⦗202⦘
“We entered Mecca, completed our rites, and set out on the return journey. When we reached the very spot where the snake had first coiled around her—the lodging where we had camped—she lay down, then woke up, and the serpent was again wrapped around her.
“Then the snake whistled, and the valley seemed to pour forth snakes upon us. They bit her until nothing remained but bones. We said to a slave-girl who belonged to her, ‘Woe to you! Tell us about this woman.’ She replied, ‘She committed adultery three times; each time she gave birth to a child, and whenever she had nursed it, she would fire up the oven and then throw the child into it.’”
