262 – ʿAbd Allāh narrated to us, and Muḥammad ibn Yūsuf also narrated to us. Muḥammad said: ʿAbd Allāh ibn Wahb narrated to me, from Muʿāwiyah ibn Ṣāliḥ, from Ḍamrah ibn Ḥabīb, who said: Ibn Zughb al-Iyādī informed him that Abū Hawālah, a Companion of the Messenger of Allah, stayed with him. He said: I heard Abū Hawālah relate from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him:
“We were sent to the outskirts of Medina to gain spoils, but we returned without taking anything. When the Messenger of Allah saw the hardship we were suffering, he prayed:
‘O Allah, do not entrust them to me, for I would grow too weak; do not entrust them to other people, for others would look down on them; and do not entrust them to themselves, for they would be incapable. Rather, take it upon Yourself to provide for their sustenance.’ ⦗176⦘
“He then said, ‘You will most certainly divide the treasures of Persia and Byzantium, and wealth will become so abundant that one of you will possess such-and-such an amount, until if any of you receives only part of a hundred dinars he will find it unsatisfactory.’
“After that he placed his hand on my head and said, ‘Ibn Hawālah, when you see the caliphate take up residence in the Holy Land, earthquakes and widespread killing will be imminent, and the Hour will be closer to people than this hand of mine is to your head.’”
