261 – ʿAbd Allāh narrated to us; he said: Muḥammad ibn Yūsuf narrated to us; he said: ʿAbd Allāh ibn Wahb narrated to us, from Abū Hāniʾ al-Khawlānī, that Abū Saʿīd al-Ghifārī related to him that he heard Abū Hurayrah say: I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say, “My community will surely be struck by the malady that afflicted the earlier nations.” They asked, “O Prophet of Allah, what is the malady of those nations?” He replied, “Self-indulgent pride and arrogance, the urge to outdo one another in amassing wealth, rivalry for worldly advantage, luxuriant ease⦗175⦘, and mutual envy—until it leads to oppression—after which rampant killing will break out.”
