240 – ‘Abd Allah reported to us; he said: Muhammad ibn al-Harith told us; he said: Shuʿbah narrated to us, from Abu Ishaq, from Sulayman ibn Surad:
“When they decided to burn Abraham—peace be upon him—in the fire, an old woman came along. They asked her, ‘Where are you going?’ She replied, ‘I am going to see that man who is about to be burned.’
When they led him off to throw him into the fire, he said, ‘Indeed, I am going to my Lord; He will guide me’ (Q 37:99). ⦗162⦘ And when they cast him into the flames he said, hasbiya Allahu wa niʿma al-wakīl (‘Allah is sufficient for me, and He is the best guardian’). Then Allah the Exalted said, ‘O fire, be coolness and safety upon Abraham’ (Q 21:69).
Lot’s father—who was his paternal cousin—then remarked, ‘The fire did not burn him on my account.’ So Allah sent a fire down upon him, and it consumed him.”
