233 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; Ishaq ibn Ismaʿil likewise narrated to us, saying: Abu Muʿawiyah narrated to us, from al-Aʿmash, from al-Minhal ibn ʿAmr, from Saʿid ibn Jubayr, from Ibn ʿAbbas—and al-Minhal ibn ʿAmr also narrated from ʿAbd Allah ibn al-Harith, from Ibn ʿAbbas—who said:

When Moses, peace be upon him, came to his people he commanded them to give the zakah. Qarun then assembled them and said, “What is this? Will you obey him in fasting, prayer, and other matters you do not even comprehend, only to end up handing him your wealth?” They said, “We cannot bear to give him our property.” They asked, “What do you suggest?” He replied, “Let us send for the prostitute of the Children of Israel and have her accuse him, before the populace and the righteous, of having solicited her for himself.” They carried it out, and she levelled the charge against Moses—peace be upon him—before everyone. He thereupon invoked Allah against them. ⦗159⦘ Allah revealed to the earth, “Obey him.” Moses said to the earth, “Seize them,” and it swallowed them up to their heels. They began crying, “O Moses, O Moses!” He said, “Seize them,” and it swallowed them up to their knees. They called out again, “O Moses, O Moses!” He said, “Seize them,” and it engulfed them up to their necks. Still they cried, “O Moses, O Moses!” He said, “Seize them,” whereupon the earth swallowed them completely. Then Allah revealed: “O Moses, My servants are calling upon you and beseeching you, yet you did not answer them. By My might, had they called upon Me I would have answered them.”
