231 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; he said: Abu Khaythama narrated to us; he said: ʿUthman ibn ʿUmar narrated to us, from Dawud ibn Abi al-Furat, from Muhammad ibn Zayd, ⦗157⦘ from Abu al-Aʿyun al-ʿAbdi, from Abu al-Ahwas al-Jushami, that Ibn Masʿud related to them:

They asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about apes and swine, saying, “Are they descended from the Jews?” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, “Allah has never cursed a people and then transformed them so that they left descendants who lived on after them; rather, those whom He transforms perish without offspring. These animals are an independent species that already existed. When Allah became angry with the Jews, He transformed them, and they took on the likeness of those creatures.”
