- ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; he said: Ishaq b. Ismaʿil narrated to us; he said: Jarir narrated to us, from Ismaʿil b. Abi Khalid, from ʿUmair b. Saʿid, who said: I heard ʿAli (may Allah be pleased with him) relate:
He told the people that this planet—Venus, which the Arabs call al-Zuhrah and the Persians call Anahid—while the two angels were serving as judges among mankind. Each of the two desired her without the other knowing. One said to his companion, “My brother, there is something on my mind that I wish to share with you.” He replied, “Speak, my brother; perhaps what is on your mind is the same as what is on mine.” The first said, “What weighs upon me is even more bitter than that.”
The woman said to them, “No, not until you tell me the words by which you ascend to heaven and descend to earth.” ⦗149⦘ They answered, “With the magnificent name of Allah we descend, and with it we ascend.” She said, “I will not grant you what you seek until you teach me that name.” One of them said, “Teach it to her.” The other responded, “But how shall I endure the severity of Allah’s punishment?” The first replied, “We hope for the vastness of Allah’s mercy.” So he taught it to her; she uttered it and flew up into the sky. An angel in heaven was alarmed at her ascent; he lowered his head and never sat again, saying, “Glory be to Allah!” and she was turned into a star.
