Al-'Uqubat - Ibn Abi al-Dunya - (32)

23 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; he said: Ishaq ibn Ismaʿil informed us; he said: Sufyan informed us; he said: Jaʿfar ibn Burqan informed us; he said:

ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAziz wrote to us:

To proceed: this rajf (tremor) is a means by which Allah, Exalted is He, chastises His servants. I have written to the provincial centers instructing them to go out on such-and-such a day of such-and-such a month; whoever has anything should give it in charity. ⦗33⦘ Allah says: “He has indeed triumphed who purifies himself” (87:14), “and remembers the name of his Lord and then prays” (87:15). And say as your forefather Adam said: “Our Lord, we have wronged ourselves. If You do not forgive us and show us mercy, we shall surely be among the losers” (7:23). And say as Noah, peace be upon him, said: “If You do not forgive me and have mercy on me, I shall be among the losers” (11:47). And say as Jonah, peace be upon him, said: “There is no god but You; glory be to You! I was indeed of the wrongdoers” (21:87).

٢٣ - حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ، قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنَا سُفْيَانُ، قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنَا جَعْفَرُ بْنُ بُرْقَانَ، قَالَ: " كَتَبَ إِلَيْنَا عُمَرُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ: " أَمَّا بَعْدُ، فَإِنَّ هَذَا الرَّجْفَ شَيْءٌ يُعَاقِبُ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى بِهِ الْعِبَادَ، وَقَدْ كَتَبْتُ إِلَى الْأَمْصَارِ أَنْ يَخْرُجُوا يَوْمَ كَذَا مِنْ شَهْرِ كَذَا، فَمَنْ كَانَ عِنْدَهُ شَيْءٌ فَلْيَصَّدَقْ، ⦗٣٣⦘ قَالَ اللَّهُ ﷿: ﴿قَدْ أَفْلَحَ مَنْ تَزَكَّى﴾ [الأعلى: ١٤] ، ﴿وَذَكَرَ اسْمَ رَبِّهِ فَصَلَّى﴾ [الأعلى: ١٥] ، وَقُولُوا كَمَا قَالَ أَبُوكُمْ آدَمُ: ﴿رَبَّنَا ظَلَمْنَا أَنْفُسَنَا وَإِنْ لَمْ تَغْفِرْ لَنَا وَتَرْحَمْنَا لَنَكُونَنَّ مِنَ الْخَاسِرِينَ﴾ [الأعراف: ٢٣] ، وَقُولُوا كَمَا قَالَ نُوحٌ ﵇: ﴿وَإِلَّا تَغْفِرْ لِي وَتَرْحَمْنِي أَكُنْ مِنَ الْخَاسِرِينَ﴾ [هود: ٤٧] ، وَقُولُوا كَمَا قَالَ يُونُسُ ﵇: ﴿لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ سُبْحَانَكَ إِنِّي كُنْتُ مِنَ الظَّالِمِينَ﴾ [الأنبياء: ٨٧] "
