Al-'UqubatIbn Abi al-Dunya

214 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; he said: Muhammad b. al-Husayn related to me; he said: Zayd b. Hubab narrated to us, from ʿAbd Rabbihi, the silk-dealer, from Bakr b. ʿAbd Allah al-Muzani, who said:

“David stayed in prostration for forty days, weeping over his sin, until vegetation sprouted from his tears. Then he breathed a deep sigh, and the piece of wood was stirred and caught fire. A voice called out, ‘Are you thirsty so that you might be given drink? Hungry so that you might be fed? Naked so that you might be clothed?’ ⦗143⦘ He replied, ‘No. It is only that my sin has weighed down my back.’ Nothing further was said to him. His weeping then intensified until his voice was spent, and nothing could be heard from him save a faint moan—at which point he was forgiven.”
