212 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; he said: Muhammad b. al-Husayn related to me; he said: ʿUbayd Allah b. Muhammad al-Taymi narrated to us; he said: Muʿadh b. Ziyad al-Tamimi told me:
“When David committed the sin, he began seeking out the devoted worshippers, weeping to them on the mountaintops, and they would weep along with him. He passed by a man who was alone and called to him, ‘I am David, the Prophet of Allah—the one who committed the sin. Has this not reached you, sir?’ The man burst into intense tears and replied, ‘O David, your sin has reached even the lizard in its hole—so how could it not have reached the Children of Israel?’ David then wept, fell down in prostration, and kept crying until grass sprang up from his tears.”
