196 – ʿAbd Allāh narrated to us; ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Ṣāliḥ also informed me; he said: al-Ḥakam ibn Ẓuhayr related to us, from al-Suddi, who said:
“He would hide during the day and only appear at night. Hunger was one of the ordeals laid upon him: he would come to a house and say, ‘Feed the beggar.’ Among the trials he suffered was that a woman would reply, ‘The servant girl has not baked bread today.’ When the hardship became overwhelming he would say, ‘Feed me, for I am Solomon son of David.’ She would then fetch some urine, pour it over him, and retort, ‘Solomon reigns in his kingdom, and you claim to be Solomon!’
In another report he said: The evil consequence of that sin went so far that someone even spat in the face of Solomon son of David, peace be upon him.”
