194 – ʿAbd Allāh narrated to us; he said: Khālid ibn Khidāsh narrated to us; he said: Ḥazm narrated to us; he said: I heard al-Ḥasan say: “The Prophet of Allah, Solomon son of David, peace be upon them, had been granted the signet-ring. When he wished to enter the bathhouse, he took off his ring and then went inside. A devil saw it, went and seized the ring, and then made his way to a wide river and flung it in. When the Prophet of Allah came out of the bath, they relate that for forty nights he was not recognised, and that he sought refuge with a poor woman. One day he went out, and while standing on the riverbank he found a fish. He took it to the woman so she could prepare it for him. When she split it open, there was the ring inside its belly ⦗132⦘. He took it and placed it on his hand, and at that moment he supplicated his Lord: ‘Grant me a kingdom such as shall not belong to anyone after me. Truly, You are the Bestower’ (38:35).”
