Al-'UqubatIbn Abi al-Dunya

181 – ʿAbd Allah related to us; Sufyan ibn Wakiʿ also informed me; he said: Jumayʿ ibn ʿUmar narrated to us, from Mujalid, who said: “Someone mentioned in al-Shaʿbi’s presence that Jonah had remained in the belly of the whale for forty nights. Al-Shaʿbi replied, ‘He did not stay there even a single day. The whale swallowed him in the late morning, and when the sun was on the verge of setting, the whale yawned. Jonah then saw the sunlight just before sunset and exclaimed: “There is no deity but You; glory be to You! Indeed, I was among the wrongdoers” (Qur’an 21:87). And he emerged.’”
