18 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; he said: ʿAlī ibn Muḥammad ibn Ibrāhīm related to me; he said: Abū Maryam informed us; he said: al-ʿAṭṭār ibn Khālid al-Ḥaramī informed us; he said: Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Malik ibn Marwān informed us: ⦗30⦘

“During the lifetime of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ the earth quaked, whereupon he placed his hand upon it and said: ‘Be still, for your appointed time has not yet come.’ He then turned to his Companions and remarked: ‘Your Lord is calling you to repent, so respond to Him.’

“Later, when the earth shook again in the era of ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb, he said, ‘People, this earthquake has happened only because of something you have introduced. By the One in whose hand my soul rests, if it recurs I will never remain among you here again.’”
