177 – ʿAbd Allāh related to us; he said: Hamzah ibn al-ʿAbbās narrated to me; he said: ʿAbdān ibn ʿUthmān narrated to us; he said: Ibn al-Mubārak narrated to us; he said: Saʿīd ibn Sinān al-Ḥimṣī narrated to us; he said: ⦗121⦘

“Allah revealed to a prophet from among the Children of Israel, saying, ‘Punishment is about to overtake your people.’ The prophet informed his people of this and commanded them to bring out their most virtuous ones so that they might repent. They went out, and he instructed them to choose three of their noblest as a delegation to stand before Allah.

The three stepped forward in front of the community. One of them said, ‘You commanded us in the Torah that You revealed to Your servant Moses not to turn away beggars who stand at our doors. We are beggars now standing at one of Your doors, so do not turn away those who beg of You.’

The second said, ‘O Allah, You commanded us in the Torah revealed to Your servant Moses to pardon those who wrong us. We have wronged ourselves, so pardon us.’

The third said, ‘O Allah, You commanded us in the Torah revealed to Your servant Moses to set slaves free. We are Your slaves, Your bondsmen; therefore grant us our freedom.’
