Al-'UqubatIbn Abi al-Dunya

167 – ‘Abd Allah narrated to us; he said: ‘Ali ibn Muhammad ibn Ibrahim related to me; he said: ‘Abd Allah ibn Salih narrated to us; he said: al-Layth ibn Sa‘d told me that the Prophet Job—peace be upon him—refrained from confronting the king of his district about the oppression the king was inflicting upon the people under his rule. Although a number of other prophets did speak to the king, Job kept silent because he owned a group of horses that were subject to the king’s authority. Allah then revealed to him: “You left off admonishing him for the sake of your horses? I shall surely prolong your trial.” Thus Allah tested him with the affliction for which he became renowned.
