158 – ʿAbdullāh narrated to us; he said: Muḥammad ibn ʿAbbād ibn Mūsā narrated to me; he said: ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz al-Qurashī narrated to us, from Jaʿfar ibn Sulaymān, from Bisṭām ibn Muslim, from Mālik ibn Dīnār, who said:

When Joseph said to the cup-bearer, “Mention me in the presence of your lord” (Q 12:42), it was said to him, “O Joseph, have you taken someone other than Me as a guarantor? I shall surely prolong your imprisonment!” Joseph then wept and said, “My Lord, the many trials have made my heart forget, and I have uttered but a single word—so woe to my brothers!”
