150 – ʿAbd Allāh narrated to us; he said: ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Ṣāliḥ told us; he said: Abū Bakr ibn ʿAyyāsh related to us, from Muḥammad ibn al-Sāʾib, from Abū Ṣāliḥ, from Ibn ʿAbbās, who said:

“Lot locked the door on his guests. The townspeople came, broke the door, and burst inside. Gabriel, peace be upon him, then struck their eyes and their sight vanished. They cried, ‘Lot, you have brought magicians against us!’ and they threatened him. Concerning this the Almighty says: ‘He felt inward fear of them’ (al-Dhāriyāt 28)—meaning, he thought: these people will leave and abandon me.⦗102⦘

Gabriel said to him, ‘Do not be afraid; indeed, we are messengers from your Lord’ (Hūd 81). ‘Their appointed time is the morning’ (Hūd 81). Lot pleaded, ‘Right now!’ Gabriel replied, ‘Is not the morning near?’ (Hūd 81). Again he said, ‘Right now!’ Then the town was lifted up until the dwellers of the lowest heaven could hear the barking of the dogs; after that it was turned upside down and they were bombarded with stones.”
