148 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; he said: Muhammad ibn Abi ʿUmar al-Makki narrated to us; he said: Yahya ibn Sulaym, from Ibn Khuthaym, from Abu al-Zubayr, who said: Jabir ibn ʿAbd Allah narrated to us that when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ halted at al-Hijr during the Tabuk campaign, he stood and addressed the people, saying:
“O people, do not ask your Prophet for signs. The people of Salih asked their prophet to bring them a sign, so Allah sent them the she-camel. She would come through this pass and drink their water on the day of her arrival, and on her alternate day they would milk from her an amount equal to what she had taken from their water. Then she would depart through the same pass. But they defied the command of their Lord and hamstrung her. Allah therefore granted them a respite of three days—a threat that did not prove false. Then the Blast struck them, and Allah destroyed everyone beneath the eastern and western horizons, except for one man who was inside the Sacred Precinct; the Sanctuary of Allah shielded him from the punishment of Allah.”
