131 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us, and I was also told through Yamān ibn Saʿīd, from Khālid ibn Yazīd al-Bajalī, from Zakariyyā, from al-Shaʿbī, who said:
“The wind would sweep past a woman in her howdah and lift her up; it would sweep past their camels and sheep and lift them as well; it would sweep past a group of them and carry them off, flying with them between heaven and earth, smashing some of them against others. It would pass by a single man of ʿĀd standing among the people and snatch him away from their midst while the onlookers watched—striking no one except an ʿĀdite.
Allah the Exalted says, ‘As for ʿĀd, they were destroyed by a furious, raging wind’ (Q 69:6), meaning: an icy wind; and ‘on an ill-fated day’ (Q 54:19), meaning: a day of ill-omen.”
