12 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; he said: Khalaf ibn Hisham narrated to us; he said: Abu ⦗26⦘ Shihab narrated to us, from al-ʿAlaʾ ibn al-Musayyab, from ʿAmr ibn Murrah, from Salim—meaning the son of Abu al-Jaʿd—from Abu ʿUbaydah, from ʿAbd Allah ibn Masʿud, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Among those who came before you, whenever a person committed a sin, someone would rebuke him as a form of admonition. Yet the very next day that same reprover would sit with him, eat with him, and drink with him, as though he had never seen him sin the day before. When Allah beheld this attitude, He caused their hearts to clash with one another and then cursed them through the words of their prophets David and Jesus son of Mary: ‘That was because they disobeyed and kept on transgressing’ (Q 2:61).
By Him in whose hand is Muhammad’s soul, you must command what is right, forbid what is wrong, seize the hand of the reckless, and compel him to adhere firmly to the truth; otherwise Allah will strike your hearts against each other, and He will surely curse you just as He cursed them.”
