11 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; he said: az-Zubayr ibn Abi Bakr narrated to us; he said: Abu Damrah narrated to me, from Nafiʿ ibn ʿAbd Allah, from Farwah ibn Qays al-Makki, from ʿAtaʾ ibn Abi Rabah, from Ibn ʿUmar, who said: ⦗25⦘ “I was the tenth of ten men from the Emigrants sitting with the Messenger of Allah. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ turned his face toward us and said:
“O Emigrants, there are five traits—and I seek refuge in Allah that you should ever experience them:
-
Whenever indecency becomes widespread among a people so that they openly practice it, plagues and illnesses unprecedented among their predecessors will break out among them.
-
Whenever a people cheat in measure and weight, they are afflicted with years of drought, high cost of living, and the oppression of their rulers.
-
Whenever a people withhold the zakah of their wealth, the rain from the sky is withheld from them; were it not for the livestock, they would receive no rain at all.
-
Whenever a people betray their covenant, Allah empowers an enemy from outside of them who seizes part of what they possess.
-
And whenever their leaders fail to rule by what Allah has revealed, choosing selectively from Allah’s Book, Allah causes strife to spread among them.”
