108 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; he said: Abu Jaʿfar al-Saffar told us; he said: Hammad ibn Zayd narrated to us, from Khalid al-Hadhdhaʾ, who said: “I travelled to Fars, and when I returned I found that al-Hasan had been charged with the doctrine of qadar. I went in to see him and said, ‘Abu Saʿid, was Adam created for the earth or for the Garden?’ He replied, ‘Abu Munazil, this is not one of your usual questions.’ I said, ‘I merely wished to know.’ He said, ‘He was created for the earth.’ I asked, ‘What if he had held fast and not eaten from the tree?’ He answered, ‘There was no escaping his eventual fall into sin.’”
