106 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; he said: Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥusayn told me; he said: Mujāshiʿ ibn ʿAmr al-Tamīmī informed us; he said: Rishdīn ibn Saʿd al-Miṣrī narrated to us, from someone who related it to him, from Wahb ibn Munabbih, who said:

“When Adam, peace be upon him, was cast down to earth, his tears would not cease. On the seventh day Allah looked upon him while he was sorrowful, choked with grief, his head bowed low, and Allah revealed to him: ‘O Adam, what is this hardship I see upon you? What is this calamity whose trial has overtaken you?’

Adam replied, ‘My disaster is immense and my sin has encompassed me. I have been driven out of the dominion of my Lord, and I now dwell in an abode of humiliation after honour, in an abode of misery after bliss, in an abode of toil and strain after ease and comfort, in an abode of affliction after well-being, in an abode of transience and departure after stability and tranquillity, and in an abode of death and extinction after everlasting life. How, then, should I not weep over my sin, or my soul not grieve? How could I ever repair such a catastrophe?’

Allah revealed to him: ‘O Adam, did I not fashion you for Myself, lodge you in My abode, choose you above My creation, single you out for My honour, cast My love upon you, and warn you of My wrath? Did I not create you with My own Hands, breathe into you of My Spirit, and command My angels to prostrate before you? ⦗73⦘ Were you not living in the very heart of My favour and at the farthest reach of My mercy? Yet you disobeyed My command, forgot My covenant, exposed yourself to My anger, and neglected My injunction. How, then, can you find My blessing strange?

‘By My might! If I were to fill the earth with men all like you who worship Me and glorify Me night and day without flagging, and then they disobeyed Me, I would send them down to the dwellings of the defiant, sinful wrongdoers—unless My mercy overtook them.’

At that Adam wept for three hundred years on the mountain of India, his tears flowing through the valleys of its hills, and from those tears, it is said, the fragrant trees whose perfume you now enjoy first sprouted.”
