Al-'UqubatIbn Abi al-Dunya

102 – ʿAbd Allah reported to us: ʿAli ibn al-Husayn ibn Ibrahim al-ʿĀmiri told us; ʿAli ibn ʿĀṣim informed us, from Saʿīd ibn Abī ʿArūbah, from Qatādah, from al-Ḥasan, from Ubayy ibn Kaʿb, who said:

The Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said: “Allah created Adam as a tall man, as though he were a lofty palm-tree, with abundant hair upon his head. When he tasted the tree, the garment that had covered him fell away, and the first thing to become exposed was his private parts. Seeing this, he began to run through the Garden, ⦗70⦘ and some of the Garden’s branches caught hold of his hair. Then the All-Merciful, Majestic and Exalted, called out, ‘O Adam, are you fleeing from Me?’ Upon hearing the words of the All-Merciful, he replied, ‘My Lord, no—I am only ashamed before You. Tell me, if I repent and return, will You restore me to the Garden?’ He said, ‘Yes, O Adam.’ ”

That is the meaning of Allah’s words: “Then Adam received words from his Lord, and He accepted his repentance, for He alone is ever-relenting, most merciful” (al-Baqarah 2:37).
