39 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; my father narrated to us; Hushaym ibn Bashir narrated to us; Husayn narrated to us, who said:
We were sitting with Saʿīd ibn Jubayr one morning when he asked, “Which of you saw the shooting star that fell last night?”
I replied, “I did.” Then I corrected myself and added, “But my being awake was not for prayer; rather, a scorpion had stung me, so I stayed up.”
Saʿīd ibn Jubayr asked, “What did you do about it?”
I said, “I sought a ruqya (therapeutic incantation).”
He asked, “What led you to do that?”
I answered, “A hadith that al-Shaʿbī related to us.”
He said, “And what did he relate to you?”
I replied, “He narrated to us from Buraydah ibn Ḥuṣayb al-Aslamī that he said, ‘There is no ruqya except for the evil eye or a venomous sting.’”
Saʿīd ibn Jubayr remarked, “Whoever adheres to what he has heard has acted well.”
