37 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; Muhammad ibn Ḥammād ibn al-Mubārak narrated to me: A man once said to Maʿrūf, “Advise me.” He replied: “Place your trust in Allah until He becomes your constant companion, your intimate friend, and the One to whom you bring your complaints. Remember death often, until it is the only companion you keep. Know that the remedy for whatever befalls you is to keep it to yourself, and that people can neither benefit you nor harm you, neither give to you nor withhold from you.”
