145 – Muḥammad ibn Yaḥyā al-Wāsiṭī narrated to us; Yazīd ibn Hārūn narrated to us; al-Yamān ibn al-Mughīrah informed us; Muḥammad ibn Kaʿb al-Quraẓī reported:

A group of scholars from Syria and from the Ḥijāz gathered together. ʿAbd al-Malik ibn ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz addressed us—while we were listening—about the words of Allah, Exalted is He: “And how can they reach it from a distant place?” (Sabaʾ 34:52). Someone asked him about the verse as we listened, and ʿUmar replied, “You have asked about al-tanāwush: it is repentance. They tried to obtain it at a time when they no longer had the power to do so.”
