142 – Muhammad ibn Harun narrated to us; Abu ʿUmayr ibn an-Nahhas transmitted to us; Hajjaj ibn Muhammad informed us; Abu al-Baydaʾ, from Salih ibn Shihab, from Abu Hibrah—who was one of ʿAli’s companions—from ʿAli, who said:
“The recompense of sin is weakness in worship, constricted provision, and hardship in enjoyment.”
It was asked, “What is hardship in enjoyment?” He replied, “A person never attains a lawful desire without something arising that spoils it for him.”
