Al-TawbaIbn Abi al-Dunya

118 – Al-Ḥusayn ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān narrated to me; he said: Saʿīd ibn Wahb performed the pilgrimage on foot, and the effort wore him down, so he recited the following verses (in the ramal metre):

My feet have ploughed the dune’s shifting sands,
and beaten the dried crust about the well’s brackish pool.
Many a day they bore you over
the blossoms of the worldly life and through a fertile vale;
To pleasant gatherings, melodious and fair,
where the mizhar-lute accompanied a fawn-like beauty.
So set this hardship against that ease, and be patient,
and take from every art its rightful share.
I walk only because I am a sinner—
may Allah, perhaps, pardon my sins.
