10. A man from Quraysh—said to be one of the descendants of Ṭalḥah ibn ʿUbayd Allāh—related to me that Ibn al-Sammāk would recite the following lines (in the sarīʿ metre):

O you who persist in sin, do you feel no shame
when, in your solitude, Allah is the One beside you?
His granting you respite, and His concealing of your mounting faults,
have only emboldened and deluded you.
