The shaykh, Imām, erudite scholar and ascetic, Muwaffaq al-Dīn Abū Muḥammad ʿAbd Allāh ibn Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ibn Qudāmah al-Maqdisī—may Allah keep granting him success—related to us. I read before the shaykh, the jurist Abū Muḥammad ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Jāmiʿ ibn Ghunaymah ibn al-Bannā in Baghdad, in the month of Rajab, year 563 AH. He said, “Al-Sharīf Abū al-Saʿādāt Aḥmad ibn Aḥmad ibn ʿAbd al-Wāḥid al-Mutawakkilī informed you,” and he confirmed it. He said, “Abū Bakr Aḥmad ibn ʿAlī ibn Thābit al-Khaṭīb narrated to us; Abū Saʿīd Muḥammad ibn Mūsā ibn al-Faḍl ibn Shādhān al-Ṣayrafī narrated to me, when I read to him in Nīshāpūr in the year 415 AH. He said, ‘I am Abū ʿAbd Allāh Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Aṣfahānī al-Ṣaffār; Abū Bakr ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿUbayd al-Qurashī, known as Ibn Abī al-Dunyā, narrated to us.’
1 - Yūsuf ibn Mūsā narrated to us; Ḥusayn ibn ʿAlī al-Juʿfī narrated; from al-Qāsim ibn al-Walīd al-Hamdānī, who said: “I asked Qatādah about Allah’s words, ‘And do not follow the footsteps of Satan’ (Qur’an 2:168). He replied, ‘Every act of disobedience to Allah is one of Satan’s footsteps.’”
