Al-TawbaIbn Abi al-Dunya

87 – Ḥusayn ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān recited to us:

O you who bask so freely in your delights,
Remember death and its suffocating pangs;
Remember the sudden blow it strikes,
And the illness—only one of its many preludes.

If you awaken certain that it must come,
Yet still know nothing of the hour appointed,
How can you be lured by pleasure even for a moment,
When it may seize you that very instant?

How many greet the morning in comfort and security,
Only for nightfall to have overturned their state.
