77 – Muhammad ibn Abi Bakr narrated to us; Saʿīd ibn Abī Maryam reported to us, from Nāfiʿ ibn Yazīd. He said: Khālid ibn Yazīd told me that Abū Rāfiʿ narrated to him that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was asked, “How many coverings does a believer have?” He replied: “They are more than can be numbered. Yet whenever the believer commits a sin, one covering is torn away from him. If he repents, that covering returns to him together with nine others. But if he does not repent, another covering is stripped from him, and this continues until nothing remains upon him. Then Allah says to whichever of His angels He wills, ‘The children of Adam reproach yet do not amend; so shield him with your wings.’ They do so. If he repents, all the coverings are restored to him; but if he does not, the angels are astonished at him. Allah then says to them, ‘Abandon him,’ so they abandon him until not a single part of his nakedness is left concealed.”
