74 – al-Ḥusayn ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān said: Abū ʿUthmān the tutor recited to me, in the Baṣīṭ metre:
Do not forget your sin—Allah is the One who conceals it;
seek Allah’s pardon for the sin you still commit.
Beware the aftermath of your sin and hope in Allah as a restraining aid;
perhaps, after that fear, your Lord will forgive it.
How many a passion, bound to disobedience,
you continue to indulge while Allah conceals it.
You have made your outward form shine while your inward state is flawed;
if a servant’s inner self is sound, his outward self will be sound as well. ⦗79⦘
Act, for you will be recompensed for what you have done;
whatever you do, Allah is fully aware of it.
Hide whatever you wish to hide—no secret escapes His knowledge.
Nothing surpasses genuine goodness; when goodness exists, Allah is Appreciative of it.
A person never parts from the deeds he has taken upon himself;
is there not fastened around every human neck his “bird” of deeds?
Righteousness is the noblest provision, piety is true honor,
and the stores of goodness, amassed together, never wear out.
