Al-TawbaIbn Abi al-Dunya

69 – ʿAwn ibn Ibrāhīm related to me; Aḥmad ibn Abī al-Ḥawwārī transmitted it to us; and Ibrāhīm ibn al-Ḥusayn told me: “A man once came in to see me while I was staying in al-Farādis, in a certain house. He said, ‘Return, for the offender has been forgiven. Yet has he not forfeited the reward reserved for those who excel?’ I later repeated this to Dīnār, whereupon he wept and said, ‘Over something like this, let tears be shed.’”
