Al-TawbaIbn Abi al-Dunya

65 – Al-Ḥusayn ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān narrated to me; Ibrāhīm ibn Rajāʾ narrated to me; he said: I heard Ibn al-Sammāk say:

“This morning I awoke as the caliph presiding over ⦗75⦘ three categories of people:

  1. A person who has sinned, then repented, firmly resolving to abandon the sin and never return to any act of disobedience—this one is truly upright.

  2. A person who sins, then sins again and again, yet weeps over his wrongdoing—there is hope for him, yet fear remains.

  3. A person who sins without remorse, sins without sorrow, sins without shedding a tear—this is the traitor who has veered from the path of Paradise toward the Fire.”
