5 – Abu Hafs al-Najjari related to me—having himself heard it from Muhammad ibn ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿUlathah, from Ibrahim ibn Abi Ablah—who said: I came in to see ⦗34⦘ ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAziz while he was in the mosque of his residence. I had come to advise him, and he listened attentively. He said, “Ibrahim, it has reached me that Moses once asked, ‘My Lord, what will deliver me from Your punishment, grant me Your good pleasure, and save me from Your anger?’ The answer was: ‘al-istighfar (verbal seeking of forgiveness), remorse in the heart, and abandoning the sin with one’s limbs.’”
