60 – Muḥammad ibn Qudāmah al-Jawharī narrated to me; Saʿīd ibn Muḥammad al-Thaqafī related to us; he said: I heard al-Qāsim ibn Ghazwān recount: ⦗40⦘ “ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz used to quote these verses (Ṭawīl metre):
Are you awake today, or are you still asleep?
How can one bewildered and astray endure repose?
Had you been truly alert at dawn,
The streaming tears would have carved channels down your cheeks.
Instead, you lie in lengthy, heedless slumber,
While grave and dreadful matters draw ever near.
Your day, O self-deluded soul, is heedlessness and distraction;
Your night is sleep, and death stays constant at your side.
You are beguiled by what will perish and distracted by empty hopes,
Just as a dreamer is deceived by imagined pleasures.
And you busy yourself with burdens you will one day loathe—
So, too, do grazing beasts pass their lives in this world."
