56 – Muhammad ibn al-Husayn narrated to me; ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿUthmān ibn Ḥamzah ibn ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿUmar ibn al-Khattāb narrated to me; ʿUmārah ibn ʿAmr al-Bajalī narrated to me. He said: I heard ʿUmar ibn Dharr say:

“Work for your own souls—may Allah have mercy on you—during this night and its darkness, for the one who is truly cheated is he who is denied the good of night and day, and the one who is truly deprived is he from whom their benefit is withheld. Night and day have been made a pathway for the believers to obey their Lord, but they shall become a calamity for others because of their heedlessness toward themselves. Therefore, revive yourselves for Allah’s sake by remembering Him, for hearts come to life only through the remembrance of Allah. ⦗38⦘ How many a person who rose to worship Allah in the night will rejoice over that standing when he finds himself in the darkness of his grave! And how many a person who slept through this night will regret the length of his sleep when, tomorrow, he sees the honor Allah will grant to the worshippers! So seize the passing hours, the nights, and the days—may Allah have mercy on you.”
