43 – Muhammad ibn Sahl ibn Bassam al-Azdi narrated to me, on the authority of Hisham ibn Muhammad; he said: ⦗33⦘ al-Sallatān al-ʿAbdī said:
[al-baḥr al-mutaqārib]
It has silvered the young and worn out the old—
the swift course of daylight, the nightly return.
When a single night topples over its day,
a vigorous new morning will quickly unfold.
We go out at dusk and at dawn for our needs,
and the needs of the living can never be filled.
A man’s many cravings expire when he dies,
yet one pressing need stays with him while he lives.
