Kalam al-Layali wa-l-AyyamIbn Abi al-Dunya

30 – Muḥammad narrated to me; Muṭīr ibn al-Rabīʿ narrated to me; he said:

Al-Mufaḍḍal ibn Yūnus, whenever night descended, would say, “A whole day of my life has slipped away.” And when morning broke he would say, “A whole night of my life has slipped away.”

When the time of his death arrived, he wept and declared, “I always knew that from the relentless alternation of you two—night and day—there awaited me a day of intensely painful anguish: its distress is severe, its choking bitterness severe, its grief severe, its hardship severe. There is no deity but the One who has decreed death for His creation and made it the great equalizer among His servants.”

He then began to recite the Quranic verse:
“He who created death and life so that He might test you as to which of you is best in deeds; and He is the Almighty, the All-Forgiving.” ⦗Al-Mulk 2⦘

After drawing a final breath, he passed away.
