14 – ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥasan ibn Abī Maryam narrated to me, through Abū …, from Ismāʿīl ibn ʿAyyāsh, from Saʿīd ibn ʿAbd Allāh, that al-Ḥajjāj ibn Yūsuf asked Khālid ibn Yazīd about the world. He replied, “An inheritance.” He asked, “And the days?” He answered, “They take turns.” He asked, “And time?” He said, “It comes in layers, and death lies on every road. So let the powerful beware of humiliation and the wealthy of poverty, for many a powerful man has been humbled and many a rich man has been reduced to need.”
